The Moscow Virtuosos were founded in 1979 by Vladimir Spivakov, one of the most famous violinists of our days. He selected this group of high standard soloists from the most important posts in the greatest orchestras of the former Soviet Union to create his own ensemble. As soon as it was formed, the ensemble was called for from all over the world. In 1987 they made their debut in the United States with such success that they returned in 1989 for a twenty-four-concert tour, and have regularly come back every year. Since 1989, the Moscow Virtuosos, with Vladimir Spivakov as conductor, regularly attend Music Festivals all over the world where they give not only concerts but also master classes. The Moscow Virtuosos and Vladimir Spivakov are frequently accompanied by other great soloists such as Mikhail Rudy, Evgeni Kissin, Natalie Stutzman, Michala Petri, etc. On the recording in hand it is Yehudi Menuhin who joins the ensemble.
Yehudi Menuhin’s musical career spanned more than seven decades. He made his debut in San Francisco as a child prodigy aged seven and by the age of 13, had performed in London, Paris and Berlin. He went on to develop his talents as a violinist, conductor and teacher, founding the Yehudi Menuhin School, in Surrey, for gifted young musicians in 1963. His performances of classical works, like Beethoven’s violin concerto were rapturously received. Albert Einstein famously said after hearing him play: “Now I know there is a God in heaven.”
